real men don't rape

hand tinting photographs, coffee cake, reading feminist novels, liking kurt cobain more than ever after i read this quote:

"Rape is one of the most terrible crimes on earth and it happens every few minutes. The problem with groups who deal with rape is that they try to educate women about how to defend themselves. What really needs to be done is teaching men not to rape. Go to the source and start there." Kurt Cobain

old soul

i was going to rant about the joys of tripods in this post, but instead i'll commiserate about the lack of Topshop stores where i live. Even though it's dangerous i've been checking out their website...and i've selected a few favourites (read: items to add to shopping basket and then degectedly decide that i cant afford). hmm i like these, que wistful sigh.

things are looking up.

today involved some time spent lying on the footpath of an alleyway, next to a gutter, while my friend filmed it. (we're making a movie and i had to pretend to be dead.)

and the lights on the streets go dark

too many deadlines looming ahead. its like being a rabbit caught in the headlights of an oncoming car...
this song, by avalanche city.
(this was taken by katie, a very talented friend of mine.)

snaps

developer really does not smell at all delightful. yet i wouldn't ever say no to a trip to the dark room to develop a few photos. it's a shame i haven't posted any of the...rather many photos i've got lying around, or stuffed in my photography folder. but i will have some digital things soon, and hopefully i will be motivated enough to approach a scanner sometime in the near future too... the charm of hand developed black'n'white photo's really is unarguable, methinks.

brass buttons & golden leaves

a whole day with my boy, us both wrapped in winter coats. a borrowed twin lens reflex camera, hanging around my neck. light meter frustrations. walks in the cold with hands clasped tightly.

c'était hier

tea + joy division makes for making a rainy cold day not-so-miserable.

clouds, concrete

went op-shopping with the boy today, we found some great stuff. it was a nice day for taking photos too.

saturday morning hannah and i biked down to visit a not-so-nearby neighbour, to ask if we could use the house that they rent out (which is empty at the moment) for a photo shoot, but they weren't in, so we parked our bikes and jumped over some gates and i shot two rolls of film by this little stream instead. at one point i was walking through the water with my tights on, and the whole time we were both dodging the sporadically placed sheep poo. it was definitely fun though!
i'm working on a project in photography class, so i've been kinda busy developing rolls of film and working in the darkroom at school, but i like it. hopefully i'll be able to scan some pictures in and upload them here soon.
i've also been looking around this website. i'm looking for some film for my new polaroid 100 (-:

we passed through a cute little town on our way home after visiting my grandad yesterday.
loving this photographer extremely.

tell it like it is, give us what we want

i can't wait for winter, i'm looking forward to it immensely. even autumn will do, if only it would hurry up already; i'm sick of the sticky sunshine and warm weather.
when this tardy cold weather finally arrives i plan to be wearing lots of these with skirts, worn over 80 denier tights aswell, if it gets extra chilly, which i'm sure it will.
infact i'm in love with this whole knitwear collection from topshop this year. my favourites, ie: the ones i would buy if i had the money.

you can do whatever the hell you want to

i'm preoccupied with everything black and white. photographs in several stages of grey. film noir, heavy eye makeup, sleek bobs, edginess. playing in my ears.
i rediscovered one of my favourite photographers, miranda lehman. she has some beautiful things on her website. she also lives in portland, oregon, which just adds to her awesomeness.

that guy is many things, but he's definitely not cool

i watched this movie & loved it.
in other news, i can't wait till i can get my own house, sometime in the distant future. i plan to paint it all white and decorate it with vintage photo frames and the like...

throw all consequence aside

i love old buildings like these. outdated, ugly in their starkness, concrete and grey; grime oozing from their pores. beautiful and cold, quite masculine.
pinhole photography. aah, the antiquated simplicity of it... we had to make our own pinhole cameras in photography this week. i brought an old tea tin with ducks on it, it works well enough...
i little note on skirts. they are wonderful, the most feminine item i can think of, apart from dresses (which can get tiresome). so much more lovely to wear than trousers or jeans, so much more nostalgic and true, worn upon the waist. i've bought three this week infact, it's summer afterall; two floral, one black.

I recall the sunshine as you were melting

two of my favourites from today. we traipsed around town with our cameras in tow, taking hundreds of photos. we had to take some breaks for coffee & hot chocolate and ended up with very sore feet, but it was worth it. i also picked up a few cute things in the opshops we went to, but more on that later...

first day

the first whole day back at school and i'm exhausted! i just want to sit and rest my sore feet, regulation school shoes aren't very comfortable, stupidly enough.
i got my first photography assignment today though: we have to take photos of architecture. i'm thinking old barns & rusty warehouses on the edge of town, and those strange buildings tucked away in little places that no one seems to notice.
today felt like a true summer day, sitting on the grass outside the english block with friends, dresses pulled up over knees because its so hot, swaying leaves leaving dappled shadows on the pavement between the classrooms.
